Tiptree’s Sarah Ivory takes top ten place at Harwich cross-country

A tough old-fashioned cross-country course with heavy clinging mud and uphill runs across strength-sapping farm fields greeted the competitors at the third 53-12 league fixture at Harwich. The combined Tiptree/53-12 team maintained their position at the top of Pool B, with second place overall on the day.

The best individual performance of the day came from Sarah Ivory, finishing a superb seventh in only her second race of the season following injury. All of the men’s team improved their league positions for the season to finish first on the day. Mark Brewer moved up five places to lead the team home in 25th place, while Nick Reynolds had an encouraging run in 28th in his first cross-country race of the season. Graham Byford made a rare appearance over the country to finish a strong 61st, followed by Phill Clarke who continues to improve in 64th spot. Ted Skinner had his second run of the weekend finishing in 68th place, while Rob Hadgraft in 88th had a close battle with Jamie Fairfull just one place behind in 89th. Despite earlier breathing problems, Martin Avent recovered to come home in 108th place. Ian Linton, also running his second race of the weekend finished 111th, followed closely by Paul Shewbridge in 112th, Sarah Ivory 7th. Carolyn Bownes finished in her highest league position of 37th to help the ladies team to fourth place on the day. Tina Clarke, just back from injury, made a brave attempt to complete the race, but the very heavy conditions proved too much in the end.

Three Tiptree Road Runners tackled the Essex League fixture at Colchester’s Hilly Fields with biting winds and heavy rain making conditions difficult. Ted Skinner was first home for the club in 98th, with Roger Duffield finishing 124th and 1st V65, despite losing a shoe. Ian Linton completed the team in 125th place.
